Garnet Chronicle (Japanese Version) – PSP Review

Today I had a chance to spend some time with Garnet Chronicle, an anime style RPG game, but unfortunately it’s a Japanese version and as far as I know there’s no release date for the English version.

Story and controls

Since it’s in Japanese, I vaguely know what’s going on, until now! Your hero character is a knight student at a Knight academy. Your first quest is to bring a letter of recommendation from the principle academy to the commandant near the town. Suddenly the entire battalion is attacked by a sinister looking character and his wolf friend, unsurprisingly the entire battalion is wiped out and of course our main hero survives but is barely saved by a sexy female thief/treasure . the hunter From there, he joins you in your quest for the “Evil Mind Stone” (sorry for the correct translation from Japanese to English). Then once inside the “Tower of Lost” you meet another character, this time it’s a wizard class and he joins you afterwards. That’s what I’m in the game for.

The controls are typical of walking around with your analog stick, R will bring up the map but so far no map when entering dungeons, the circle is confirmed while the cross is canceled, typical Japanese style, the American version may have these two buttons reversed. Unfortunately, there’s no jog button, so walking can feel slow at times. You can also save the game at any time and thankfully the menus are in English and Japanese explanation, but only the menus.

Gameplay and graphics

The game is an old RPG similar to Final Fantasy (until Final Fantasy X-2, as the battle system has changed since FF11). You and your enemies will take turns attacking/defending/casting magic at each other. It’s fine, except that it feels very slow and quite boring, it would make a big difference if the attack was smoother and faster so that the previous attack could be executed as soon as the move is finished. But as you get more people on your team, the combat gets more interesting and faster, so it’s not too bad after all. Level grinding is also part of the game, but not required. However, it’s surprisingly quick to level up, at least in the first 20 levels where the grinding can really speed up. As you complete each battle, you’ll receive money, experience, random items, and skill points. Skill points can be spent on each character’s skill tree to unlock more powerful attack and support skills. Skill points are shared between all your characters, unfortunately! And finally, the money you earn in each battle will obviously go towards buying weapons, armor and support items. There are also cards and stones that can enhance your weapons, such as turn your sword into an ice element and enhance your special abilities. Treasure chests are scattered all over the map, anywhere inside buildings, in the forest or in towns. Some are not so obvious as I have discovered a hidden one until now.

One interesting feature I’ve never seen before, at least in an RPG, is the “sneak” feature. When you sneak up on your enemies without being seen, you can damage them before the fight even starts. It’s the same for enemies, if they spot you, they’ll run towards you and if your back is facing them, you’ll be the first to attack. You’ll know when your enemies have spotted you when an exclamation mark appears above their heads. This feature is independent of who attacks first when the battle starts, so it means you can attack twice the chance an enemy attacks you, same goes for enemies. You can use this feature to get the upper hand in battle and it makes fighting a lot easier.

Graphics are not fancy but well drawn anime style. Everything is based in 2D, but don’t let that get you in, even though the characters are simple 2D sprites, their expressions and body gestures can be clearly seen depending on the situations. There are also some pretty cool special effects when your characters use their special abilities.

One thing I don’t like is that all the enemies look the same on the map, so you don’t know what kind of enemies you’re going to face until the battle screen comes up. I don’t see why the developers can’t make the enemies appear on the map as well. But then again, what if there is more than one type of enemy, which one would they show? Maybe that’s the reason.

sound

Your typical anime music, your characters and enemies will say something before they attack, which makes the fight less boring. Sometimes your characters will even voice during conversations. I can imagine that the English translation will be bad and take away the Japanese “atmosphere”, just like any other game that has gone through an English translation to Jape. In general, the music is great most of the time, but sometimes it can be too repetitive and annoying in the background.

The Last Judgment

Overall, I think this game is worth trying, this type of game is nothing new, but the game is enjoyable. I had trouble shutting down my PSP until the batteries died while playing. That should give you an idea of how addictive and enjoyable this game is, especially for level grinders like me. Hopefully the American version will be released soon so that those of you who speak English can enjoy this game as much as I do now. And for those who don’t care about Chinese, Japanese or the story, you can get a copy from eBay or YESASIA.
