The Collection Of Momiji Dolls

Momiji dolls are modern-era collectible hand-painted dolls inspired by the Kokeshi dolls that were made in the Edo period from 1603 to 1867. The word momiji comes from the Japanese word for maple leaves, but these are not of Japanese origin. all. These momiji are also called message dolls because these dolls have a small slot in the base where a message can be hidden in a folded piece of paper. Momiji dolls feature modern Chinese-looking characters and are resin molds painted with images inspired by current anime features. These 3 inch (approx 8 cm) dolls were launched in 2005 by Artforum Limited in the UK and were not from any Japanese manufacturer.

Mainly for children and teenagers, these cute colorful dolls have several collection series, such as the Itchy Feet collection dolls designed by Nina Zimmerman. The dolls in this collection are inspired by traveling in magical lands. The characters in this series are Mabel, Mika, Sonny, Souzi, Nani and Luca. Each piece will cost only $15 and each character comes with their own accessories along with a special folding message card.

Other series include: Celebration Dolls, Linnea Borjesson Dolls, Adolie Dolls, Heroes Dolls and The Book Club designed by Luli Bunny. The Book Club features various characters inspired by Japanese pop art and each doll carries a book with her. The characters are Enid, Phoebe, Alex, Danielle, Eve and Clarice. There is also a series called Flock-It-Dolls, created by award-winning manga artist Joanna Zhou. Tiger, Tulip and Pea make up the collection and each character in this collection comes in a transparent zip-lock package. Zhou’s new edition line of Momiji comes with six dolls, namely Kitty, Lolita, Kogal, Sakura, Papillion and Pinku, and now comes with a tin box.

Momiji dolls are also produced in limited numbers and some collections are retired early, thus giving collectors a rare opportunity to own a specific design. Some of the retired series are in demand by Momiji collectors, and some of the limited-edition characters include Purrl, Funny Girl, Poppet, Pixie, Silly Billy, Coco, Giggles, Ted, Soul, and Dancing Girl. Most of the limited edition figures were only produced in batches of 500 pieces and are individually numbered before being distributed for worldwide sale. For those interested in limited designs, they can be had for around $25 online.
