Weekly Review: Erased

We’ve all had those moments, those moments when something goes horribly wrong and you were there. At that moment you will probably think about how you would have been able to change the outcome, if you did something or nothing, it would have predicted a disastrous outcome. Satoru Fujinuma is a man with a very special ability; the ability to go back in time to moments that could have made a difference. He calls the phenomenon “Rebirth”. Unlike a superpower, it cannot control it. Whenever it happens, it’s more of a deja vu effect, except that, like most of us, he remembers the event before or after it happened. He notes that Revival usually returns between five and ten minutes, at which point he knows something is about to happen and sees something out of place in his surroundings.

At this point you might be thinking, okay, who is this guy? The basic downer is that Satoru is a manga artist and works part-time as a delivery man. There are hints that he isn’t very successful in his manga artist career, as in the first episode his boss tells him that he needs to be more “into it”. Other than that, he’s just your normal guy who did what he needed to do to get by in life at the moment. He doesn’t keep in touch with his friends, as he later explained that instead of opening up and making friends, he put on a false front during his childhood. The only person we see him really socialize with is his mother, who comes to stay with him. Well, I think Airi counts, but she pretty much hides it.

Let me tell you what this show is all about. Of course, since our main character has this special ability, it’s going to be about that, right? Right, but in a very special way. You see, Satoru comes home one day to find his mother murdered, this is after an instance of Revival where nothing seems to go wrong. The villain cleverly sets up Satoru as the prime suspect. Terrified, he runs. That’s when the very powerful Revival starts. You know how it only takes five to ten minutes to go back? This time it goes back eighteen years, to when Satoru is in elementary school.

I’ll spare you the details because you might want to watch the series for yourself. However, the story focuses on two points in time, one more than the other: the present, where Satoru is being marked and hunted, and the past, when Satoru is an elementary school student, but before a series of kidnappings / murders are about to occur. The series focuses more on the latter, but returns to the present a couple of times for different reasons. The premise of the story is that, at least in Satoru’s eyes, this powerful Revival sent him back in time to this particular time to stop a kidnapping/murder that is somehow connected to his mother’s murder. Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember much about elementary school. Satoru soon realizes this and comments at several points that his friend is struggling to remember everything that is going on right now.

This story was amazing and enjoyable. The way things unfold, and the way Satoru reacts to situations and tries to defuse them is truly wonderful. It’s everything you’d expect from a mystery anime. I was afraid of this anime being dark because I didn’t care much for the mystery genre, but the dark scenes are on par with the light scenes, if not surpassed. For example, there are plenty of scenes showing the happiness between Satoru and his friends to counteract the dark and edgy scenes involving the kidnappings/murders.

I would definitely recommend this anime to anyone who is a fan of good anime stories. It doesn’t matter if you’re particularly into the mystery genre or not, this heartwarming anime story will touch you! I didn’t really bond as much as I had hoped. I found myself shouting in triumph at the end that for special reasons surrounding the Airi girl, you’ll just have to watch and find out for yourself. Give it a go, it’s a bit emotional, but it’s a beautiful story.
