Presenting – The Beaches Library – A Centre of Learning and Community Interaction

In the heart of the beach, just a few steps from the intersection of Queen Street and Lee Avenue is the Beaches Library, a 17th-century building by architect Eden Smith. A stunning building designed in the 19th century English Collegiate Grammar School style. A $50,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to the Toronto Public Library facilitated construction. The current building replaced a shop library and was opened in December 1916.

Two other almost identical libraries (Wychwood and High Park Branch) were opened at the same time, and George Locke, the chief librarian, wanted the three buildings to “bring some memory of Scotland and Scots into the minds of people in the outlying districts”. English country-style architecture. The design was considered a “decided rebellion” from the classical style of other Carnegie libraries.

The building is impressive and features a high hammer-beamed ceiling, a plain stone fireplace, leaded glass windows and a minstrel gallery. In 2004, the west section of the Library was renovated and restored and reopened to the public in January 2005. The new two-level wing is a harmonious architectural addition to the existing building, which integrates very well into the design. Since 1979, the Toronto Beaches Library has been included in the Toronto Heritage Inventory.

I had several opportunities to visit the Beaches Library: as a meeting place for historical tours with Gene Domagala, when the library’s Bureau Chief Barbara Weissmann gave me historical information about the Beach, and as my special stop. A trip to the beach with Sandra Bussin, who thinks the Beach Library is her favorite building on the Beach.

I went there one afternoon and spoke with Eniko Szabo, the children’s librarian, who told me about the various programs offered to children and adults at the Beach Library. Eniko herself is also a puppeteer and offers animated shows for children throughout the year.

Barbara and Eniko directed me to several special places in the building: the multipurpose room on the main floor with a fireplace, to the cozy seating areas on the two levels in the west wing, which, according to Eniko, offer some of the best sunset views. Toronto; A fine view from the gallery above the Reading Room; the historical tapestry that was created as a community project, and the original water source that has been preserved over the years.

The Beaches Library offers English print material, fiction and non-fiction for adults, teenagers and children as well as videos, DVDs and CDs. In addition, an extensive local history collection and a wide selection of audio books, a career information collection, English as a Second Language materials, language learning kits, a large print collection and a French collection for both adults and children. . Beaches Library is one of the most active libraries in the Toronto Public Library system, one of the largest and busiest library systems in the world. Public use has increased dramatically since it reopened after refurbishment in 2005, proving the popularity of this branch of the library.

The Beaches Library also hosts a number of special events, including a weekly “Wednesday Afternoon at the Movies” with classic and contemporary feature films every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Beaches Book Lovers is a monthly entry for book discussions. Beaches Library Teen Programs include March Break anime movies and a Knitting Circle that teaches basic stitches and how to knit a funky scarf. Knitting Circle is also offered for children aged 7 and up. Popular Storytimes are available for children of different ages, including Babytime, Toddler Time and Preschool Storytime.
