Tales of Xillia

Ah Japanese RPGs, a staple of my gaming life. In Japan, the market is full of such games (obviously that’s why they’re called JRPGs), but there have always been two main series among the many titles in the genre: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Behind these two there has always been a series in a row, and that would be the Tales series. Starting way back on the Super Famicom As of 1995, Tales of Phantasia has spawned 14 games in the main series, and 9 sequels. On top of the newest North American release, Tales of Xillia 2, I wanted to check out the Tales of Xillia title for the PS3. After playing a lot through this game and logging in for almost 50 hours, I feel primed and ready for the sequel.

The game begins with the choice to play as either Jude Mathis, a soft-spoken medical student, or the mysterious Milla Maxwell. This will trigger certain cutscenes and even playable events throughout the game. No matter what you choose, you will meet a set of characters, 6 playable in total. These characters develop and grow throughout the game. I went back to previous towns to check on characters who had a role earlier in the story, and was rewarded with reunion scenes, something I’ve never seen before. It really makes you feel like the characters are still alive after the main story.

The story has always been for the Tales series, and it continues Xillian. The main quest line is a rollercoaster of ups and downs, surprises and twists. The game had me on the edge of my seat as I tried to mentally prepare myself for what was coming next. The story is fast-paced, but not “Wait, what should I do now?” to the point you’re asking, and even if it’s biased, the game has an “Event List”. you can get a brief summary of the story and everything that has happened so far. The story is truly moving and endlessly interesting.

One thing that makes the Tales series different from the other two franchises I mentioned above is the combat. It might look like the same stuff you’ve seen in a typical Final Fantasy game, but it won’t take you long to realize what makes the battle system so awesome. When facing an enemy, the screen switches to what Tales calls the battle map, there are four party members to engage in combat, but here’s the kicker, the combat action plays out like a beat em up game with RPG elements including abilities and items . confused The combat is smooth and exciting, and battles only last 10 seconds to a minute, so you won’t get tired of fielding monsters or level grinding like in a traditional turn-based RPG.

Most people would prefer the good to the bad, so I’ll start with the good: the sound. The sound in this game is absolutely amazing. From the voice acting to the sounds of Jude punching enemies, to the soundtrack; The sound in this game is mesmerizing and I loved every second of it. I can’t say enough good things about the voice acting in this game, as each character speaks with the right emotions, be it happy, silly, sad or angry – they all work perfectly. My favorite voice of the cast would have to be Rowen’s senior, as he is very similar to the gentleman he portrays on screen.

Unfortunately, I can’t give the same praise to the graphics. While I understand that this game was released in Japan two years ago, I think they could have smoothed out some of the game’s textures and cleaned up the game a bit. Sometimes the mouths didn’t match the words, and other times the animation felt a bit laggy. One thing I can say is that the game has some great anime cutscenes in the heat of the story. When things get really intense, Xillia brings the cinematography with some powerful and beautiful animated cinematography. Although the graphics of the game are not the best, I can say that some areas of this game are breathtaking. I found myself taking a step back to see the scenery often in awe. Overall, the graphics aren’t terrible, but they aren’t great either.

The game has a lot to do after beating the game, from hidden side bosses, side quests, and Alfried Treasure to collect. Even after completing the story, I still managed to get 15 more hours into the game. One notable addition is the extra dungeon, Magnus Zero. Not only is it an awesome twenty floors, but after you beat the boss at the end, you have the option to go through it again on a harder difficulty.

Tales of Xillia is a good buy for any RPG fan, and even if you have only a passing interest in the genre, this game is at least worth a look. The game gives you what you pay for: a story of over 45 hours with many optional games. Overall, this game is a good addition to the wonderful Tales series, and I can’t recommend it enough.
