The Artists Behind Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar The Last Airbender is an American show that has been released by Nickelodeon but maintains a Japanese animation style. The plot of Avatar is a typical fantasy action plot, with super powers and a main character holding secrets to almost god-like power, but must go on a journey to unlock them.

This show has a very strong cast. That’s where Bryan Konietzko comes in, a 29-year-old powerhouse of creativity through artistic design. In 2005 he appeared alongside Michael DiMartino in an Animation Insider interview. He first worked as a character designer at Film Roman, where he got into the thick of animation productions and how they were executed. From there he moved on to become a character designer for more influential shows. That includes Family Guy and King of the Hill, which helped him coordinate his style. Konietzko also has experience story boarding with the Invader Zim series and has attended animation schools. For Avatar, he is the art director and character designer; is also an executive producer.

Michael DiMartino is another influential member of the Avatar creators and designers. He is 31 years old, and has spent many of those years learning about animation production (he spent 12 working at Film Roma). He is the other executive producer and story editor for Avatar. He has worked with Konietzko on shows such as King of the Hill and Family Guy as a director. He has also created his own animation called Atomic Love; and has participated in many film festivals.

In an interview with Animator Insider, the two men discussed what happened in Avatar The Last Airbender. Before starting work on Avatar, the team knew they wanted it to be based in Asia and not European and they wanted to give it some elements of Asian mythology. They started creating mythology for this show, such as how things worked using their supernatural powers. They are clear that in the show it is not called “magic”, but it goes along those lines because they are using elements and supernatural powers. One of the most fascinating parts of the creation of the show is the use of different types of martial arts. There are four different elemental powers in the show: water, fire, earth and wind; they all have their own distinctive fighting styles.
