The Legend of Masamune Sword Smith

As in music, there are classics like Bach and Beethoven, there are some names associated with the exquisite perfection and art of Japanese swordsmithing. Masamune is definitely one of them. His swords are renowned for their quality and originality and are considered an example of the fine art of sword making. The most surprising is the XIII. In the 19th century there were no sophisticated forging tools and the steel used to make swords was generally impure. However, many sword makers today cannot compete with Masamune swords in terms of elegance, nie (martensitic pearlite crystals) and most importantly quality.

Since Japan was threatened by the Mongols at the time, the Sword Queens were quite busy. A sword in the hands of a samurai capable of killing ten thousand Mongols and beautiful enough to wear with pride – that was the main requirement for samurai to order swords and Masamune was the best.

Not much is the sword signed by Masamune. You may have heard of some of them, such as “Daikoku Masamune” or “Fudo Masamune”. All of the 50 Masamune swords that have survived to this day are legally certified as state property or imperial rule of Japan. This is why it can only be seen at exhibitions or sword shows. So the next time you see an ad for an exhibition with the name Masamune, don’t think twice and go; you may have no choice but to see Masamune’s sword.

Goro Nyudo is Masamune’s historical name. Historians believe that he lived and worked in Sagami Province from 1288-1328 and was taught by famous sword kings such as Kunimitsu and Kunitsuna. After working with them, Masamune learned their techniques and developed them creating the Soshu sword school. There is a legend about Masamune’s jittetsu (follower/disciple). As the saying goes, they were 10 years old and learned the art of sword making with Masamune, implementing their own ideas and methods of forging the blade. It was probably the first type of workshop attended not only by beginners, but also by experienced and well-known swordsmiths.

XIII. In the 19th century, Japanese samurai expected a weapon to be both functional and beautiful, so Masamune, like other sword queens of the time, had to perform a rather difficult task. In addition to their quality and elegance, Masamune swords are famous for their unique nie. Nie refers to the part of the blade that is on the temper line (hamon) or between its edge line and the temper line (ji). It is the result of the interaction of the steel during the bending process. In general, the heated blade was covered with layers of clay of varying thickness and used in cold water quenching patterns. The color contrast of the metal increased with different cooling times, creating light gray swirl patterns. The first association that comes to mind when you look at them is moving clouds. This is one of the main characteristics that distinguish Masamune swords and make them almost perfect.

Masamune swords have the highest number of references in the “Japanese Swords of All Time” catalog (Kyoho Meibutsu Cho). His sword was believed to have spiritual powers and there are many stories that only people with a pure soul could wield it.
