Sword Art Online Alicization First Impressions

The third season of Sword Art Online is finally here. The Alicization arc has been long awaited by people like me who have read the entire arc through the light novels. To put it in perspective, the first two seasons of the show were collected in books 1 – 9; alicization is books 10 – 18. So there is a lot of content.

The series does a bit of a reset of the original story. We have a story where the child Kirito plays with two other children, Eugeo and Alice. This, we learn, is testing a new diving technology that is indistinguishable from real life. After being attacked by the third perpetrator of the fatal weapon incident, he is taken to the hospital. The next thing he knows, Kirito wakes up in a virtual world known as the Underworld.

Things slowly unravel as Kirito puts his problem-solving skills to the test, and Asuna shows off some detective skills on the outside. The real question is, what is the Underworld, and why does it exist? You will eventually learn, as well as the beginning of corruption within the Underworld.

So far, how does it compare to light novels?

Pretty good, actually.

The first few episodes of the show do a great job of following the light novels almost perfectly. All the important parts of the building are there, and it’s really amazing to see the characters I’ve read about come to life in animation.

Now there are some parts that are cut that I don’t agree with. I counted two major scenes that should have been in the first six episodes, but weren’t. These scenes were important for character development; one for Kirito, and the other for Eugeo. The most important scene was for Eugeo because he’s a newer character and we can always use more buildings.

Then episode 7 happened.

Episode 7 threw a nice step to the wind and went through half a book’s worth of material, which I don’t like. We get a flashback covering Kirito and Eugeo’s journey to become students at Swordcraft Academy, but it was actually much deeper than a flashback. They also rush the relationship between Kirito and his mentor, which is really sad, especially since he’ll be back later, and it would help develop their relationship more.

Overall, I’m very happy with how the anime plays out. In the end, the book is almost always better than the anime or movie, so I can’t complain too much. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, and I’m enjoying watching the story unfold before my eyes.
