Animation Art – 5 of the Most Common Mediums Purchased by Collectors

Animation Cels – A cel (short for celluloid) is a blank sheet of plastic used by the studio artist to paint an animated character or object based on the animators original pencil drawing. The cells are then placed over a background and photographed in sequence to create the illusion of life in the finished short film or cartoon. Each cell is different but that does not mean that each cell is unique. Inkers often created multiple copies of a cel as color models to advance their techniques and skills in Animation Art.

Limited Edition Cels – Hand painted cels created for sale in the non-production collectors market. It is produced in fixed limited quantities and is easily identified by a fraction (150/500) in the lower right corner. They were not used in the films or cartoon shorts, and were a recreation of the original production cells. Today, many studios release new images based on the production of animated art.

Screens – Non-production cells created by a printing process similar to screen printing. No work is done by hand, so no paint or ink is involved. They are often produced in limited quantities of 5000 and are marketed as a low cost alternative to production and limited edition cells.

Animation Drawings – A pencil drawing on paper, sometimes colored, created by a studio artist of an animated character or object from which the cells will later be created.

Giclee – The French term “Giclée” literally means “ink spray” to describe these prints. Four precision nozzles spray one million microscopic droplets per second onto the fine art paper. Each paper is then assembled individually by hand. Showcasing a full spectrum of colors, the prints are lush and velvety, capturing the subtle nuances of the original artwork.
