Vector Art Techinque

Vector art is a technique, that is, art created with vector-based programs. Vector art basically uses dots, lines and curves. Vector programs consider the relationship between these elements. This allows the resulting images to change their scale without quality or pixelation. In comparison, pixels lose quality when they go above 100% of their size.

Popular vector programs are Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw and Flash. Almost everything created with these programs is considered vector work. I say “almost” because there are exceptions to every rule. If your vector work is a combination of vector images and raster images, I’m afraid it’s no longer a vector work (and therefore not part of the Vector Gallery).

For example: to finish your vector work, you think your work is missing something, and you put it in Photoshop to give it a little texture, trying to make it more complete. At that point it is no longer a vector work, and you should upload it to “Digital Art > Mixed Media”. In the same way, if you take a rasterized texture and place it in Illustrator applying a layer style, it will not be a vector work.

Since this texture cannot be scaled up more than 100%, it makes your vector technically useless after original size raster images. Don’t even think you can’t add textures to your vector work. Many of these programs are equipped with detailed model samples, textured brushes, as well as “Live Trace” which, as its name suggests, traces raster images and converts them into vector graphics.

Again and making sure there’s no confusion, here’s a list of generally raster-based programs: Photoshop, Painter, MS Paint, and the great free alternative, Gimp. Basically, everything created with this program is considered a rasterized image. Some of these programs are capable of creating images with points, lines, and curves, just as a vector program would.

Photoshop can make vector-based images, however, they are usually considered “vexels” because vexel artists incorporate brush strokes (hair, etc.) into their images.

Speaking of hands. Just because you’ve downloaded and installed a brush set for Photoshop (or any other raster image program) with the word “vector” in the title, that does NOT mean your work is vector. These brushes come in a variety of sizes, and regardless of the resolutions you apply, they can never be scaled up more than 100% of their size without losing quality.

Simply put, Vector is not a style like Anime, but a medium like charcoal. Asking what vector art looks like is asking what oil paintings look like. It can look like a Rembrandt, a Picasso, or a fifth grader’s finger painting.
